What is Sensory Overload?

Sensory overload is when your five senses—light, sound, taste, touch, and smell—take in more information than your brain can process.

Overwhelmed by all the input, the brain responds as it would to a life-threatening situation and enters the fight, flight, or freeze mode.

it means you also need to work hard to control this response.

If sensory overload makes you feel the same as if a predator attacked you, you won’t feel good; You may feel unsafe, fearful, panicky, sweaty, pale, and shaky. Sensory overload is physically and mentally draining.  These feelings and symptoms can take up to half an hour to subside. This process can be sped up for some by calming or regulating practices (deep breathing, meditation, weighted inputs, taking time away from others, and similar).
